I draw from gospel, classic soul, blues and modern R&B — names like Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke, Nina Simone and Otis Redding — and from poets and storytellers such as Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston. Both music and literature feed my research, songwriting and the way I tell stories on stage.

Love this mix of influences — especially the literary side. How do you bring those poets on stage?

Sam Cooke influence is strong in my favorite track — can you share which records inspired you most?
